East Branch of the Penobscot

The East Branch of the Penobscot is a wild river that skirts Baxter State Park and the newly formed Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. Deeply rooted in Maine woods lore thanks to Joseph Polis of the Penobscot tribe guiding Thoreau there in 1857, the East Branch has a wide variety of temperaments and character.
The upper section that flows out of Grand Lake Matagamon is a rugged section with 4 portages in the first 7 miles and many challenging rapids. This trip however begins below Bowlin Falls and brings us into beautiful silver maple floodplain and calmer water. We can explore the confluence of the East Branch and Sebois River as well as Wassataquoik Stream. We have the opportunity on this trip for a hike up Deasey Mountain with views of Katahdin rewarding us at the top. The overall pace is relaxed leaving time for learning new skills like canoe poling, friction fire, knot tying, open fire cooking or just reading a book. This is a great trip for beginning paddlers and folks looking for a shorter wilderness experience.
